CRNA programs vary in competitiveness and in which GPA they weight most heavily. Some programs look at overall GPA; others look specifically at science GPA (biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, microbiology); still others weight recent coursework (last 60 credits) differently than cumulative GPA. The program you're targeting determines which number to focus on.

GPA is one component of an application that typically has six to eight evaluation dimensions. Understanding the weight of each helps you allocate the time between now and your application date.

If your undergraduate GPA is below 3.3, there are concrete steps that move the needle. The key insight is that admissions committees are assessing your ability to succeed in a rigorous graduate program — your ability to demonstrate that ability through recent, graduate-level academic performance is more compelling than explaining a decade-old undergraduate record.
Post-baccalaureate science coursework: Taking graduate-level or upper-division undergraduate courses in chemistry, biochemistry, advanced physiology, or statistics and earning A grades is the most direct way to demonstrate academic capacity. One semester of strong graduate coursework can change an admissions committee's read of your application.
Retaking prerequisite science courses: If your original science grades were poor (C or below), retaking those courses and earning A grades demonstrates both improvement and mastery. Many programs will recalculate your science GPA using the higher grade. Check each program's repeat policy before investing in retakes.
Work on everything else simultaneously: While improving your GPA, maximize the other components. Earn your CCRN. Log 4,000+ hours of critical care. Shadow CRNAs extensively. Get strong letters from CRNAs who have observed your clinical practice. By the time you apply, a 3.2 GPA with CCRN, 4 years of CVICU experience, and a compelling personal statement is more competitive than a 3.7 GPA with 18 months of MICU experience and no CCRN.
Research published in AANA Journal and Nursing Education Perspectives has examined predictors of CRNA school academic performance and attrition. Consistent findings: undergraduate science GPA is the strongest academic predictor of success in the first year of CRNA school. ICU experience level and CCRN certification predict performance in clinical rotations. Neither GRE scores nor overall undergraduate GPA is as predictive as science-specific academic performance. This research informs why many programs have shifted toward heavily weighting science GPA and graduate-level course completion over raw overall GPA.
GRE requirements for CRNA programs have declined since 2020, with many programs moving to test-optional policies during the pandemic and not reinstating requirements afterward. As of 2026, approximately 40–50% of accredited nurse anesthesia programs still list the GRE as required or recommended. For programs that require it, the quantitative reasoning section is most scrutinized (floor around 148–152 is common; competitive applicants score 155+). Verbal reasoning floors are lower; analytical writing scores receive the least weight.
If you have a borderline GPA and the program requires the GRE, a strong quantitative score can partially offset the GPA concern. A 160+ in quantitative reasoning paired with a 3.2 GPA is a different application than a 3.2 GPA with a 148 quantitative score.
CRNA school admissions is a holistic process where a mediocre score in any one area can be offset by excellence in others — up to a point. The science GPA floor is real and not easily negotiated around. The ICU experience requirement is real. The CCRN expectation at competitive programs is close to real. But the good news is that every variable except your past undergraduate grades is within your control right now. Start with the highest-leverage items: CCRN certification, maximizing ICU acuity and hours, and taking one strong graduate-level science course. Build the application around documented excellence in the things that predict clinical success — and use the personal statement to make the committee feel what drives you to anesthesia, not just what your credentials say.
