A crisis contract is issued when a hospital faces an acute staffing emergency — typically a disease surge, natural disaster, mass resignation event, or hospital strike coverage. Rates are significantly above standard travel, and fill quickly. In 2020–2021 COVID crisis assignments paid $10,000+/week. In 2026, true crisis rates range $4,000–$7,000/week for ICU nurses.

High cancellation rates. Crisis situations resolve — or budgets get cut. Many crisis contracts are cancelled with 48–72 hours notice. Always read the cancellation clause. If you've paid for housing or flights upfront, you may not be reimbursed.
Difficult work environments. You're being hired because the hospital is in chaos. Expect minimal orientation, unfamiliar protocols, and staffing ratios that strain even experienced ICU nurses.
Housing scarcity. Crisis situations often occur in areas with limited short-term housing. Factor in housing costs before calculating your actual take-home.

Ideal candidates: 3+ years ICU experience, no major financial obligations tied to a specific location, flexibility to move with 1–2 weeks notice, and emotional resilience for high-stress environments. Crisis assignments are not right for nurses in early career or those still building clinical confidence.
