Amazon Seller Central gives you data. What it doesn't give you is systematic thinking about that data. The highest-performing FBA sellers I know use paper alongside their dashboards — not to replace the data, but to force the weekly reflection that turns data into decisions. A dedicated FBA tracking journal does this.
A purpose-built Amazon FBA log should cover: ASIN and product name; date sourced and source (OA, RA, wholesale, private label); units purchased; COGS per unit; FBA fulfillment fee; referral fee; net profit per unit; ROI percentage; sell-through rate; monthly PPC ad spend; and ACOS (advertising cost of sales). This is the unit economics picture that determines whether a product is actually worth reordering.
One of the most common mistakes Amazon sellers make in their first year is mixing FBA income with personal finances. A dedicated FBA business log — separate from personal spending — makes it possible to see actual business profitability, calculate self-employment tax quarterly, and evaluate the business as a standalone enterprise. When you eventually need an accountant, a clean log is invaluable.
RA sellers benefit specifically from a sourcing trip log: which store, which departments yielded finds, what items didn't scan profitably, what ROI threshold you're targeting, and how many hours the trip took relative to profit generated. Review your FBA log weekly, not monthly. Monthly reviews catch problems too late — you've already ordered more inventory of a product that's going stale. Weekly review of sell-through rate, current FBA stock levels, and reorder math keeps your capital working.
