Log books are the quietest corner of Amazon KDP — and one of the most consistently profitable.
Unlike novels, you don't need writing ability. Unlike workbooks, you don't need subject-matter expertise. A log book is a structured template — date fields, column headers, note sections — printed on demand by Amazon and shipped to buyers who use them for years.
Here's exactly how to go from zero to published in one week.
Log books sell because people have ongoing tracking needs that apps don't fully serve. A nurse who logs procedures physically can take it to CRNA school interviews. A pilot who logs flight hours in a paper logbook meets FAA record-keeping requirements. A plant parent who tracks watering schedules on paper doesn't lose data when their phone breaks.
Amazon's print-on-demand model means no inventory risk. A buyer orders, Amazon prints it in a warehouse near them, ships it, and deposits 60% of the list price into your KDP account. You do nothing after the initial upload.
The highest-converting log books share four features:
Start with a niche you understand. The narrower and more specific, the better. "Daily Planner" has 50,000 competitors. "Travel Nurse Contract and Assignment Log" has 200.
Research on Amazon: search your niche, look at books with 10–100 reviews and #1–50,000 BSR (Best Seller Rank). That range means real sales with low enough competition to rank.
Strong log book niches in 2026: professional trade logs (electrician, plumber, HVAC), clinical specialty logs (ICU, NICU, CRNA prep), hobbyist logs (birding, fishing, amateur radio), fitness logs by method (powerlifting, marathon training, pickleball).
Your interior is the actual pages buyers receive. For a log book, this means:
Tools: Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Canva. Create a table with 5–7 columns, header row in dark background with white text, alternating row shading. Margins must be at least 0.5 inches on all sides; interior pages go to 6×9 or 8.5×11 trim size.
Export as PDF. This is your print-ready interior file.

Hit Publish. KDP reviews take 24–72 hours. If rejected, they'll tell you why — usually a margin issue or image resolution problem. Fix and resubmit.

The first book teaches you the system. Books 2–100 are faster because the interior template is reusable — change the column headers and title, and you have a new book for a new niche.

Too-broad niche: "Daily planner" is 50,000 books. "Wildland firefighter incident log" is 10. The second one gets found. Wide niches are won by publishers with 10,000+ reviews and $5,000/month ad budgets.
Under-priced: At $4.99, your royalty on a 6×9 paperback is $0.66 after printing. You need 75 sales to earn what 10 sales at $9.99 earn. Price at $8.99–$12.99.
No description: The description is sales copy. "This log book helps you track your shifts" is not sales copy. "Finally, a log built specifically for travel nurses — compact enough to fit in your scrubs, structured for how you actually document" is.
Waiting for perfect: The first book you publish will be your worst. Publish it anyway. You'll improve the template on book 2, and book 1 keeps selling in the background.
