Low-content books — journals, planners, logbooks, coloring books, trackers — are one of the most accessible passive income streams that exist. You create the file once, upload it to Amazon KDP, and collect royalties indefinitely. No inventory. No shipping. No customer service. Amazon handles everything.
I have published 52 of these books. Here is what I know.
Most people who try KDP fail because they publish generic books. "Daily Journal" with lined pages. A gratitude journal with no niche. A planner with no target audience.
The books that actually sell are specific:
Specificity signals the right buyer. Generic books disappear in search results. Specific books appear when the exact right person is searching.

Search Amazon for your niche. Look at the BSR (Best Seller Rank) on the books that appear. A book with a BSR under 100,000 is selling at least a few copies per month. A book under 50,000 is selling consistently.
Look for niches where:
The interior is the inside pages. For a journal, this is lined or dotted pages with prompts. For a tracker, this is structured tables and fill-in sections.

KDP requires PDF format. The most common trim sizes: 5x8 (small journal), 6x9 (standard journal), 8.5x11 (planner or workbook).
Your cover is your marketing. It's the only thing a buyer sees before clicking. It needs to:
KDP provides a Cover Creator tool for free. Canva has KDP cover templates. For print books, KDP provides a cover template calculator — use it, because spine width changes with page count.
Pricing for low-content books:
KDP gives you 7 keyword fields. Use all 7. Search Amazon yourself for your book — the autocomplete suggestions are real search terms people use.

These numbers assume well-niched books with good covers and keywords. Generic books will underperform. The compounding effect is real — each book you add increases total catalog visibility because Amazon's algorithm starts to recognize your publisher account.
Once you have KDP books, you have the PDF files. Those same files can be sold on Etsy as "printable PDFs" — instant digital downloads. Etsy's audience skews female, craft-adjacent, and gift-buying. It's a different buyer than Amazon. Your margins on Etsy are higher (no printing cost) but volume is lower per listing.
Running KDP + Etsy from the same content library is the closest thing I've found to genuinely passive income from a single piece of work.
