Every day on eBay, thousands of listings are priced below what the same item sells for on the other side of the platform. Someone lists a Lego set for $40 because they need quick cash. Someone else searches for that exact set and pays $75 for it.
Arbitrage is buying the $40 set and selling it for $75. Simple. Repeatable. Scalable.
Arbitrage means buying something in one place and selling it at a higher price in another. eBay-to-eBay arbitrage works because:
Your edge: research. You know what it's worth. They listed it without checking.
| Category | Why it works | Typical profit | Risk level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lego sets (retired) | Consistent appreciation, easy to authenticate | $20–$150 | Low |
| Nike/Jordan sneakers | StockX provides sold comps, massive demand | $30–$200 | Medium |
| Pokemon cards (sealed) | Sealed products appreciate reliably | $20–$500 | Medium |
| Power tools (used) | Low counterfeit risk, functional value easy to verify | $25–$100 | Low |
| Vintage video games | Prices well-documented, niche knowledge pays | $15–$200 | Low |
| Apple products (refurb) | High demand, brand reliability | $30–$150 | Low-Med |
Step 1: Search eBay for your category (e.g., "Lego 75192 Millennium Falcon")
Step 2: On the left sidebar, check "Sold Items" filter. This shows what the item ACTUALLY sold for in the last 90 days. This is your target price.
Step 3: Look at active listings. Find any priced 30%+ below the average sold price.
Step 4: Calculate: Sold price − eBay 13.25% fee − shipping − your cost = profit. Need $15+ minimum, ideally $30+.
Step 5: Buy it. Relist with better photos and accurate title.
Searched "Lego 10305 Lion Knights Castle." Sold comps: averaging $220 completed. Found an active listing: $130, "local pickup or shipping," poor photos, no item specifics filled in.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Purchase price | $130.00 |
| eBay selling fee (13.25%) | -$29.15 |
| Shipping (USPS Priority, ~10 lbs) | -$18.00 |
| Sold for | $220.00 |
| Profit | $42.85 |
Time spent: 15 minutes of research, 20 minutes of photography and listing. Less than 45 minutes of work for $43.
eBay final value fee: 13.25% of total sale price including shipping. This is the main fee. Budget it into every deal before you buy.
PayPal/payment processing: Already included in eBay's fee as of 2024.
Shipping: Use eBay's shipping calculator for an estimate. USPS Priority Mail is best for most items under 15 lbs. Get a postal scale ($15 at Walmart).
Returns: Accept returns to attract more buyers. Budget 3–5% of sales for occasional returns.
Start with 1–2 flips per week to learn the process. After your first 10 successful transactions, increase to 5–10 per week. The constraint is usually time spent sourcing, not selling.
The automation path: tools like the eBay Browse API let you scan thousands of listings automatically and flag deals that meet your criteria. This is what the ARIA arbitrage scanner does — instead of manually searching, the bot checks 500 listings while you sleep.
